Self-Support Strategy

The Focus: Refugee families in deeper trouble; they do not have a strong educational background and/or are unemployed. They require a range of skill development and training.

The Model: In cooperation with a local refugee resettlement agency, Amaanah works to extend the assistance period for these refugees to allow focused time on training and development.

The Impact: Refugees without a strong educational background are at a higher risk of using up both government assistance and assistance from local resettlement agencies before finding employment. Amaanah is working with a local resettlement agency to gain extra time for acquiring the skills needed for financial independence. Amaanah will pay the rent and utilities for refugees up to 4 months while providing intensive case management services: job training and placement, ESL classes, and other development services. With an individually-assigned caseworker, refugees receive one-on-one special
attention and support along with a self-sufficiency plan drafted together with the client. Coordinating with the agency, Amaanah will ensure the client is meeting all goals and expectations with regular visits and motivational support.
