Executive Director - Ghulam Kehar
Ghulam’s passion for refugee service is astounding. As part of Amaanah’s founding group, Ghulam also serves on the Advisory Board on Immigrant and Refugee Affairs for the City of Houston Mayor, a two-year term starting in 2011. He completed his higher education at University of Houston graduating in 2009 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Economics and Management. He has several years of professional experience in the areas of Operations Management, Finance, and Marketing in both the non-profit and corporate setting.
Business Operations Manager - Anum Jakvani
Anum was born and raised in Orange County, California and graduated in December of 2011 from the University of Houston with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. Anum was a specialist at Apple and then worked as an administrative assistant at a private school. She teaches a class at Sunday School as a volunteer. Before she came onboard with Amaanah full time, she volunteered for 3 years. At Amaanah she ensures day-to-day operations are functioning smoothly and effectively. Anum is ambitious to learn much more about managing non-profit organizations, and is looking out for the best for Amaanah’s clients and staff. When you visit the Amaanah office, she is the first person you’ll see.
Senior Programs Director - Tabinda Ghani
Tabinda always knew what she wanted to do. Her higher education, experience, and impact speak for what she is today: a resilient non-profit professional. Tabinda holds a Master’s degree in Social Work and Business Administration, both of which she completed at the University of Houston. She completed her undergraduate degree in Operations Management and her Nonprofit Alliance certification in Nonprofit Management from the University of Houston as well. Tabinda has worked in a variety of non-profits including The Women’s Resource of Greater Houston and Harris County Systems of Hope. She joined Amaanah in 2008 leading development and outreach efforts before moving to the Programs Division.
Senior Finance Director - Amina Mehic
Perhaps nobody understands the plight of the refugee more than Amina. Originally from Bosnia, Amina was forced to flee during the Bosnian War to Germany where she lived for six years. She then arrived in the USA as a refugee. Amina has over 10 years of experience in corporate and nonprofit finance. Amina has held positions of internal audit and AP businesses. She then moved to Maryland where she worked for the US Food Services and later for Bon Secours, heading up the accounting departments. She holds degrees in Business Administration and Accounting and also speaks fluent Bosnian, German, and Arabic.
Senior Development Director - Aamer Jamil
Director of Education - Irfana Hussain
Irfana is our linguistic expert and wordsmith, extending her studies of languages with travels to South Asia. With a degree from the University of Texas-Austin in 2006, Irfana has been teaching Literature and History at the college and secondary school level for several years. Along with managing the After-School program, she is currently expanding her knowledge of non-profit management.
Director of Events - Salma Nassef
If Salma was tasked with the sole responsibility to amplify the energy level and bring on the excitement, she would be up for the task. Her vibrant energy and excitement has proven contagious. Salma began volunteering for one of Amaanah’s distribution events in May 2010 and has gotten hooked since. She now serves as an active member of the Amaanah team, helping with event organization and other crucial tasks. Salma’s background is in science and health education, so reaching out to the community in this capacity came to her naturally. She is currently completing her Master’s in Genetic Counseling at the University of Houston.
Director of Development - Hamza Khan
‘Jolly’ describes Hamza Khan in a word. Leave it to Hamza to bring out the best out of any a tense situation. His personality makes him the best person for Amaanah’s prime networker in donor relations. With a degree in Finance from the University of Austin, Hamza’s excellent networking skills have connected Amaanah with various donor groups and supporters around the city. Upon meeting Hamza, we challenge you not to walk away from that conversation feeling unusually chirpy.
Volunteer Director - Marketa de Rooy
In order to complement her Master in Social Work degree with a hands-on experience, Marketa devoted most of her free time to volunteering abroad. She has traveled to more than 35 countries worldwide, visiting refugee camps, hospitals, orphanages and various non-profit organizations. Marketa also worked in international business education and completed Rice University Leadership Institute for Non-Profit Executives Program. She is a passionate advocate of community service and civic involvement and always welcomes new volunteers on board.
After School Program Coordinator - Komal Naqvi
